Imagine What Becomes Possible

Over the previous six Insights we’ve explored the Communication Gap from different perspectives.

We’ve looked at understanding rather than information.

At interpretation rather than intention.

At customer contact as evidence.

At avoidable demand.

At organisational capacity.

At Hidden Residents.

Each Insight has examined a different consequence of the same challenge.

Now comes the more important question.

What becomes possible when organisations begin creating understanding more intentionally?

Communication as a Strategic Capability

Every organisation invests in the capabilities it believes are essential.

Operational capability. Financial capability. Digital capability. Workforce capability.

These capabilities shape the quality of the services organisations deliver.

Yet there is another capability that influences every one of them.

Communication.

Not communication as a document. Or a website. Or a letter.

But communication as an organisational capability that enables people to understand, participate and make informed decisions.

Every organisation already has a communication capability.

The question is whether it has been designed intentionally or whether it has simply evolved over time.

Looking Through a Different Lens

When organisations begin viewing communication through the lens of understanding, different questions naturally emerge.

Not:

“Did we send the letter?”

But:

“Did it create understanding?”

Not:

“How many calls did we receive?”

But:

“How many existed because understanding wasn’t achieved?”

Not:

“How many people completed the process?”

But:

“How many were able to complete it independently?”

Not:

“Did we publish the information?”

But:

“Who was able to benefit from it?”

The communication hasn’t changed. The questions have.

And those questions lead organisations towards different decisions.

A Different Future

Imagine an organisation where communication is recognised as part of service design rather than the final step in delivering it.

Where understanding is considered alongside compliance.

Where customer contact helps improve communication rather than simply measuring performance.

Where digital success is measured not only by completed transactions, but by independent participation.

Where families, carers and advocates spend less time explaining communication and more time providing the support that only they can give.

Where customer service teams focus their expertise on helping people with genuinely complex needs rather than routinely translating information.

Where more people discover opportunities. Take part in consultations. Attend community events. Access support. Participate confidently in the life of their community.

Not because services became simpler but because understanding became stronger.

Leadership

None of this requires organisations to abandon what they already do well. It builds upon it.

Operational improvement remains essential. Digital transformation remains essential. Accessibility remains essential. Customer service remains essential.

The opportunity is to recognise communication as something that connects them all because communication isn’t simply how organisations explain their services.

It is how people first experience them and first impressions often shape everything that follows.

Where Vera Fits

Vera was created with a simple purpose.

To help more people understand information well enough to make informed decisions for themselves.

Over time that purpose has grown.

Not because the mission changed but because our understanding of the challenge became clearer.

Vera is not the Communication Gap strategy nor is it the complete answer. It is one capability that helps organisations strengthen one of their most important capabilities.

Creating understanding.

Because when understanding improves, better outcomes naturally follow.

For organisations. For staff and for families.

And most importantly, for the people they serve.

Thought to Leave You With

Imagine what becomes possible when more people understand.

Fewer people will need clarification.

More people will act independently.

More families will spend less time translating information and more time simply being families.

More people will discover opportunities they never knew existed.

Communities will become more connected because more people are able to participate in them.

Imagine the confidence someone feels when they achieve something independently for the first time.

Imagine the dignity that comes from understanding without needing someone else to explain.

Imagine the opportunities that become available when communication creates understanding instead of uncertainty.

Because the purpose of communication isn’t simply to send information.

It is to make more things possible for more people.

Imagine what becomes possible.

About the Communication Insights series

This briefing is the seventh in a series exploring The Communication Gap—how organisations can strengthen their communication capability to ensure more people understand, access and benefit from the services available to them.

The insights are based on our work with public sector organisations and the thinking that has shaped the evolution of Ask Vera from an AI-powered Easy Read & Plain English platform towards a broader communication platform designed to help organisations close the Communication Gap.
