Voice. Engagement. Reach. Action.
A Communication Capability for Modern Organisations
We Deliberately Didn’t Start with Vera
Over the previous seven Insights, we have spoken very little about Vera.
That wasn’t an accident.
The Communication Gap exists whether Vera exists or not. People struggle to understand information whether Vera exists or not.
Hidden Residents exist whether Vera exists or not. Avoidable demand exists whether Vera exists or not.
Families, carers and advocates quietly spend countless hours helping people understand communication that was never intended to be difficult.
None of those challenges were created by technology. They already exist.
The purpose of the previous seven Insights was not to introduce a product. It was to introduce a different way of thinking.
Only once we understand the challenge does it become useful to talk about possible solutions.
This is where Vera fits.
A Different Way of Thinking
Throughout this series we have explored a simple philosophy.
Communication is not measured by what we send. It is measured by what people understand.
Understanding enables informed action. Informed action enables greater independence.
Greater independence enables fuller participation in society.
When organisations create understanding, better outcomes naturally follow.
For residents. For families. For staff. For organisations. For communities.
That philosophy has shaped everything Vera has become.
VERA
Voice.
Every organisation has a voice.
It speaks through:
- Letters.
- Emails.
- Websites.
- Forms.
- SMS messages.
- Consultations.
- Policies.
- Appointments.
- Leaflets.
- Social media.
- Videos.
Everything an organisation communicates contributes to how people experience its services.
Voice is more than publishing information.
It is how organisations begin every relationship with the people they serve.
Engagement.
The purpose of communication is not simply to inform. It is to engage.
Engagement begins when people understand enough to participate.
To make informed decisions. To ask meaningful questions. To contribute their views.
To access services confidently.
Understanding is not the end goal.
Engagement is.
Reach.
Organisations rarely struggle to communicate with the people they already reach well.
The challenge lies elsewhere.
Who quietly relies on others? Who disengages?
Who never discovers the opportunity that was available to them?
Who concludes that something simply “isn’t for people like me”?
Reach asks organisations to look beyond who received the communication and begin thinking about who truly benefited from it.
Because communication that fails to reach people has consequences that often remain invisible.
Action.
Communication exists for one purpose.
To enable action.
Sometimes that action is completing a form. Sometimes it is applying for support. Sometimes it is attending a community event. Sometimes it is seeking advice. Sometimes it is deciding to ask someone for help.
Successful communication does not dictate the action someone should take.
It enables them to choose the action that is right for their own circumstances.
Communication as a Strategic Capability
For many organisations, communication has traditionally been viewed as the final step in delivering a service.
The letter is written. The webpage is published. The email is sent.
The consultation goes live. The communication is complete.
But perhaps communication should be viewed differently.
Perhaps it is not the end of service delivery.
Perhaps it is the beginning. Because everything that follows depends upon whether understanding was created.
Organisations already invest heavily in operational capability ,digital capability, financial capability, workforce capability.
Communication deserves to be recognised alongside them.
Not because it replaces those capabilities but because it strengthens every one of them.
What Vera Does
Vera exists to strengthen an organisation’s communication capability.
Every feature, every capability.
Every future development begins with one question:
Will this help more people understand?
Today, that includes capabilities such as:
- Creating Easy Read information.
- Producing Plain Language versions of complex documents.
- Supporting multiple languages.
- Improving the clarity and readability of communication.
- Helping organisations quality assure communication before it reaches residents.
- Supporting consistent communication across different channels.
Tomorrow, it will continue to evolve. Not because technology changes but because communication challenges evolve.
Whatever the capability, the purpose remains the same.
Creating understanding.
More Than Technology
Vera is not a replacement for customer service. Nor does it replace families, carers, advocates or support workers.
Some conversations will always require human expertise. Some people will always value personal support.
Vera exists for a different reason.
To ensure that more people arrive at those conversations already understanding enough to ask informed questions.
To ensure that support is used where it creates the greatest value.
To increase independence wherever possible.
To reduce unnecessary dependence wherever understanding alone can make the difference.
Imagine…
Imagine what becomes possible when more people understand.
Imagine families spending less time translating letters and more time simply being families.
Imagine customer service teams spending more time solving complex problems and less time explaining communication that could have been understood from the outset.
Imagine more people participating confidently in consultations, community events and local democracy.
Imagine residents discovering opportunities they previously missed.
Imagine Hidden Residents becoming visible.
Imagine organisations measuring communication not by what they send, but by the understanding they create.
Imagine communities where more people feel confident enough to act independently.
Imagine the quiet smile on someone’s face as they achieve something for themselves that they never believed they could.
That is what Vera is really trying to create.
Not better documents.
Better understanding.
Our Belief
We believe communication should create understanding.
We believe understanding should enable informed action.
We believe informed action creates greater independence.
We believe greater independence creates stronger, more connected communities.
Everything Vera does today—and everything it will become tomorrow—is built upon those beliefs.
Because Vera doesn’t simply stand for four words.
It stands on four principles.
Voice.
The way your organisation communicates with the people it serves.
Engagement.
Creating understanding that enables participation.
Reach.
Ensuring more people benefit from the opportunities you create.
Action.
Giving people the confidence to make informed decisions for themselves.
Imagine what becomes possible when more people understand.
It strengthens your Voice.
It improves Engagement.
It extends your Reach.
It enables Action.
About the Communication Insights series
This briefing is the eighth in a series exploring The Communication Gap—how organisations can strengthen their communication capability to ensure more people understand, access and benefit from the services available to them.
The insights are based on our work with public sector organisations and the thinking that has shaped the evolution of Ask Vera from an AI-powered Easy Read & Plain English platform towards a broader communication platform designed to help organisations close the Communication Gap.
